Supporters of Bernie Sanders are keeping Washington State’s superdelegates under pressure. Over the weekend, Socialist Sanders’ backers rallied on the state Capitol steps in Olympia.
They carried signs that read, “It’s not democracy if you choose for us,” and “We want democracy for our superdelegates.”
By late afternoon, the rally managed to attract 200 people in support of Socialist Sanders. The only demand of the protesters was that our state’s superdelegates respect the wishes of Democrat voters who, during the March 26 caucuses, supported Sanders by a whopping 72 percent of delegates.
The rally is the latest in a series of demands made by Sanders’ supporters of Washington’s 17 Hillary Clinton-backing superdelegates, including Governor Jay Inslee, U.S. Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray, and all six Democrats in the state’s U.S. House delegation.
With Sanders folks “feeling the Bern”. they first launched an online petition on MoveOn.org that demanded superdelegates “follow the lead of average Democratic party voters and uphold authentic democracy.” Then, they upped the ante and issued an ultimatum.
Not one of the stunts has worked. Superdelegates like Inslee appear determined to (as usual) fall into the party line and throw their support behind Clinton.
