It’s the day of the big debate – with Jay Inslee once again trying to defend his dismal first term “record” against Republican challenger Bill Bryant. Evidently there will also be a second debate on before the gubernatorial one, to get people warmed up, or something like that.
So, while we know what we’ll be writing about tomorrow on Shift, today we take a look at how Donald Trump has become a factor in the Superintendent of Public Instruction race – and not necessarily in the way that Democrat State Representative Chris Reykdal was hoping. Also probably not hoping for attention in Shift was State House Speaker Frank Chopp, who decided to channel his inner Kshama Sawant at a public meeting, coming out in favor of getting rid of the state law against rent control. Now that won’t make some donors very happy in the closing days of a campaign that has Chopp trying to hang on to a narrow two-vote majority.
And a Monday wouldn’t be complete without chuckling at the Seattle City Council, this time over the effort to put the ACLU in charge of the homeless problem in the city. Perhaps the council members figure the ACLU can’t do any worse than Mayor Ed Murray and the clown crew currently in charge of city policy.
