The state Department of Corrections (DOC) knew for over three years that it was mistakenly releasing up to 3,700 inmates early, in violation of the law, but didn’t fix the problem. Lawmakers are conducting an investigation into the scandal, though Democrats seem intent on politicizing the issue and the DOC seems intent on evading questions.
In order to get the investigation moving, lawmakers have retained an attorney to help. GOP Senate Majority Leader Mark Schoesler called the choice an “important step in getting to the truth.” Via the Seattle Times,
“Although the department prepared a software-programming fix, it was delayed 16 times — for reasons that remain to be explained. A fix was implemented this month…
“Senate Republicans have said they are not satisfied that an investigation ordered by the governor can be considered independent.”
Democrats, for some inexplicably reason, have preferred to politicize the scandal rather than actively and adequately pursue answers to the scandal. Ultimately, prisoners who were released too early killed two people in 2015.
Washingtonians deserve answers that, simply put, have not been given.
