Over the last few years, the myopic legislative Democrats in Olympia have consistently proven that they are unable to see very often past the end of their own noses (or urban districts) when it comes to lawmaking in Washington State.
Take Democrat State Representative Cindy Rhu as an example. Rhu, who represents the 32nd district encompassing Edmonds, Lynnwood, and Shoreline, has been on a mission to ban studded tires since 2016. Rhu, who made an impassioned legislative floor speech about one of her perennially introduced tire bills increasing fees on studded tires by $100 per tire, made the claim that we don’t need studded tires, because “it doesn’t snow that much in Lynnwood”.
Try telling that to the ranchers in Republic who are buried in snow several months a year, and who if the bill had passed would be looking at $400 per vehicle just to get up their driveways. Maybe Rep. Rhu needs to get out a little more.
Or consider Democrat Senator Patty Kuderer, who has so many bad ideas we can’t list them all, but we would be remiss if we didn’t cover a few (dis)honorable mentions, Senate Bill 5842 and Senate Bill 6295. SB 5842 or the Toxic Horse Meat bill has no text in it describing what toxic horse meat is, but Kuderer must have had a really bad restaurant experience to prompt writing the one-sentence bill.
She wasn’t horsing around with SB6295, which would require farmers to record everything a horse might ingest in the 180 days before they sell it and disclose that feed record to the buyer. Sen. Kuderer may represent a few wealthy horse owners in Kirkland’s Bridle Trails, but the average farmer might feel that regulation take a bite out of their profits for little reason.
Why does Kuderer hate horses and what they eat so much?
Democrat Representative Beth Doglio, who left the legislature last year for a failed congressional bid, ran legislation instructing others how to handle recycled ammonia (fertilizer). Doglio obviously thought ammonia is more important that dealing with homelessness, since her district has a crisis as do most other Democrat-run areas.
Thankfully Rep. Doglio is no longer in office trying to regulate poop.
To be fair, not all Democrat Senators ignore the world outside the lefty leaning Seattle districts. Democrat Senator Manka Dhingra is a self-proclaimed Senator of the world. Rather than working for her constituents to improve their lives, Dhingra is more focused on using Washington State taxpayer dollars to set foreign policy (and acknowledge her allegiance to her old country) than on those paying the bills here.
Democrats in Olympia need to be focused on their own districts rather than trying to “fix” everyone else’s problems. The rest of the state would sure appreciate it.
