You can generally tell when a “reporter” is in the bag for the Democrats when they respond to bad news for Democrats (like last week’s primary), by trying to make the case that Republicans have bad news too!
Such was the case on Publicola yesterday, a liberal Seattle blog, when the writers suggested that the GOP will be so depressed by the result of having its preferred candidate – Pedro Celis – winning the primary to face seriously underperforming freshman Democrat Suzan DelBene (who barely won a majority – 50.68% – as of today’s votes). Yeah, that was depressing – Republicans have a strong general election candidate with a great personal success story against a Democrat incumbent whose only campaign message is that she has a very big checkbook for TV ads (DelBene has spent nearly $9 million in the last four years trying to create a positive image for herself while running for three different Congressional seats).
Publicola also tried to “defy conventional wisdom” by writing that Clint Didier somehow has a chance in the Fourth Congressional race – because the folks at Publicola love to write about Tea Party candidates. However, anyone who understands politics would look at Dan Newhouse as the next Congressman from that Central Washington district based on the facts – the GOP won over 75% of the total vote, and Didier is taking less than a majority of the GOP vote.
So, in the general, Didier will continue to win less than a majority of the GOP vote – though still another 30%-plus showing as the most conservative candidate in the race – and a much lower percentage for independent and Democrats in the district.
That equals victory for Newhouse, and more depression for Publicola.
