State Representative Gael Tarleton must not have paid much attention to the state Legislature during her time as Seattle Port Commissioner, because she apparently believe that Democrats proposing a tax increase is a “new idea.”
Shift bases that assumption on a tweet that Rep. Tarleton sent out yesterday in which she attacks state Senator Michael Baumgartner for suggesting it should be harder to raise new taxes (like Jay Inslee’s promise-breaking capital gains tax). Tarleton tweeted that this would create a “No New Ideas Allowed” job no one would want.
Tarleton appears to have forgotten that the Democrat caucus, of which she is a member, proposes new taxes every session. In fact, the creation of a state income tax is in her party platform.
Tarleton also suggests that making it more difficult to raise new taxes means “paralyzed in place, not leading the way.” Apparently, Tarleton believes that new taxes lead the way. Like many of her Democrat colleagues, Tarleton fails to recognize that new taxes should never lead the way. Rather, taxes hikes should always come as a last resort.
