The Washington State Republican Party (WSRP) just released the following statement as an April Fools’ Day prank:
“Invoking executive order, Jay Inslee announced today that he will instruct his Department of Transportation to restrict one lane on I-405 to bicycles only. Inslee, who seeks to be the country’s “greenest governor” said today that getting people out of their cars and onto their bikes will help alleviate the bumper–to-bumper traffic that has clogged I-405 ever since the Inslee tolls went into effect.
“‘Commuters in King and Snohomish Counties who refuse to pay the hefty tolls to drive in faster HOV lanes, are causing traffic jams and polluting the air. This will end when they switch to clean bicycles in a lane all their own,’ Inslee said.
“Converting lanes of the interstate highway system to bike lanes is unprecedented anywhere in the country. Inslee says he has President Obama’s approval.”
The statement is rather amusing, because it hits so close to home. For Inslee and his extreme “green” allies, it doesn’t matter that tolling schemes do not actually reduce traffic congestion. That’s why Inslee (and his fellow Democrats) refused to enforce substantive reforms to the I-405 tolling scheme.
Rather, it has a lot more to do with the government acting like a nanny state and forcing commuters out of their cars and on public transportation in an attempt to fulfill some “green” idealistic goal.
The Left’s top transportation priority is not to reduce travel times for working families—that’s why Democrats failed to add reducing traffic congestion to the state’s list of priorities for years. It’s about pumping taxpayer dollars into feel-good, “green” projects that have little impact on working families.
