Last week, we exposed a rather bizarre email from a liberal activist addressed to every member of our state’s Legislature, which demanded lawmakers develop and submit to her a gun control plan for our state. The email lambasted lawmakers for failing to immediately act on I-594, a gun-control measure, even though the initiative garnered the “requisite amount” of signatures. Instead, lawmakers sent it to voters in 2014.
The obvious problem with the liberal’s argument is the weak grasp about how the initiative process—or campaigns for that matter—work. Obtaining the “requisite amount” of signatures on an initiative does not compel the state Legislature to adopt it into law, as the activist appears to assume.
But, the argument also reveals a less obvious but troubling trend. Liberals are increasingly disdainful of the democratic process. Whether the issue is gun control or tax hikes, liberals engage in the idea that they—though they may be in the minority—know what is best. And, the government should impose its will without question.
